Hi all
When does a Noisy contactor need replacing?
Is there a point where it becomes a safety issue?

Re: Nelson electrician Stephen Burton’s failure to carry out ‘simple task’ linked to death of builder Craig Johnston
Lessons there for all of us. A good example of the 'swiss cheese" theory of how things go wrong First an error of assumption about what was there, followed by failing to test to confirm / reject that assumption; followed by non-compliant work; followed by failure to fully test. I to took all 4 of t...

Re: Nelson electrician Stephen Burton’s failure to carry out ‘simple task’ linked to death of builder Craig Johnston
I’m guessing a bit here, it’s difficult to fully understand the details from this article, but to me it sounds like he replaced a fixed wired appliance with a socket outlet. The cable at the range hood was a 2C+e. The red and green are both active (red permanently active, green switched), black is ...

Nelson electrician Stephen Burton’s failure to carry out ‘simple task’ linked to death of builder Craig Johnston
Hi all An interesting read https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/nelson-electrician-stephen-burtons-failure-to-carry-out-simple-task-linked-to-death-of-builder-craig-johnston/FPM5HK5DVNHNDNRWASXMBV56XA/ Some of the story didn't make sense to me Was the rangehood hardwired or plugged? Re: Duct vs Conduit
It was just the Marley Maxi or something like that. The product has AS/NZS standard 5xxx can't remember the number, but that is good enough for me. Overthinking the problem :) I'm using a surface mount in a shed. I'm going from a "Meterboard" to "Switchboard" (they are really close) and I was wonder...

Re: Duct vs Conduit
Thank you Alec I hadn't thought about that. I trained in a time before standards (ECP's) and it's a different mindset. When I was an apprentice I was told as a rule of thumb unsheathed cables need to be protected by an enclosure that required the use of a tool or key to access. Using that mindset a ...

Duct vs Conduit
Hi all Can "Conduit wire" be installed in "Square lid Clip on Duct" without additional protection (TPS vs single insulation)? Just wondering if "Square lid Clip on Duct" and "Pipe Conduit" are considered the same level of protection. I was always taught the use of a tool to access cables was require...

Re: generator supply in an emergency
The maximum demand of the electrical installation must not exceed the maximum rating of the generator. All the generating devices I have used have a built-in protection device to stop overload. The cowshed maximum demand was bigger than the generater but it was managed via a selection of required c...

Re: generator supply in an emergency
So if I find an inspector......If the generator is for larger three phase connections, an electrical engineer or inspector must be used to provide a design for this supply configuration.
What will be in this design?
Does somebody have a template?

Re: generator supply in an emergency
Yes, I had some of the same questions We have a couple of big Tractor PTO Generators for cowshed supply when the power is out. The generator came with an RCD. Many years ago I removed the RCD because the cowshed leaks power like a sieve. It's the 30mA that is the problem. 30mA a whole installation i...

Copper tails for aluminium sub mains
Hi all
What are the rules around copper tails, length and size reduction for joining to aluminum?
I'm going to run some 95mm Aluminium 390m underground.
I would like to add tails 5 - 10 meters on each end.
Never put tails on before.

Re: Farm pump - underground power supply cable type
InterestingNot to save the cost of the PEC; but because you want the earthed equipment at this remote part of the installation to be at similar potential to the ground at that location.
I thought supply via RCD would have been a greater safety factor

Farm pump - underground power supply cable type
Hi all Cable type selection question I'm looking at running a 500m cable underground to a farm water pump station. (Pump (4 amps) + Lights + GPO) My plan was to run 4 core Neutral screen 95mm AL but have discovered that is not a common cable. I don't trust the farmer not to cut the cable via Mole pl...

Hi all
The new draft DR AS/NZS 3001.1:2020 is out.
https://shop.standards.govt.nz/docserv/ ... 1_2020.pdf
I notice big changes around "scope"
1.1.3 (a) Domestic installations.
Does this mean if my bach has 8 caravan points that its excluded from 3001

Re: Single core cable entry into metal enclosure
Thanks for that
I had a read, I didn't know that the slot width is proportional to cable size (20%).
Question: Does single TPS cable(s) need to be run in trefoil?
Looks like single core neutral screen does

Single core cable entry into metal enclosure
Hi all
When single core power cable(s) would enter into a metal enclosure we used cut a square hole and cover it with a large aluminium plate then drill holes through that.
Its this still a requirement?
Does it make any difference?
Thanks
