Re: N pin on socket used for other means

I have a site that has motors controlled via VFD. The motors are run in suitable VFD cable. The client wants the motors to connect via plug and socket arrangement. Rather than a 3+E socket they want to use a 3+N+E but want to use the N pin to continue the screen through. I don't like this at all, I...

Re: Single Phase Welders, let's get to the bottom of this

WorkSafe - Energy Safety did something about this situation in 2021 and issued a prohibition on use of an adaptor/supply lead that allows a higher rated plug to be adapted down to a lower rated plug without inline protection. Sign up to the updates on their website, that's how they advise of things...

Re: Single Phase Welders, let's get to the bottom of this

I expect that tally-plate rating of 14.4 A will be the max continuous load, ie at 100 % duty cycle. The unit won't be able to draw 23.8 A continuously. Yet, that is the input current my welder is drawing, during a steady bead placement, maybe the thing is faulty, but it does good welds. :D Also the...

JamieP,
What sort of explosive dust are we talking here?
Is this some sort of an extraction system?
Also, what sort of length of run are we talking?

Cheers,

EWRB COC Audits?

Hi Guys. I remember back when Self-certification came in in 1992, the ERWB were hot on auditing the CoC's of people working in the trade. Over the years, this seems to have calmed down a bit. I can't remember the last time I got an e-mail from the Board that they wanted to see CoC's from such and su...

Re: Single Phase Welders, let's get to the bottom of this

Hey thanks AlecK, That has cleared up a lot of things for me. Being a qualified welder myself, before having got into the electrical trade, I have a single phase TIG welder here at home that draws 23.8A at full noise (200A output), this had a 15A plug on it when bought from new, 5 years ago, althoug...

Re: Employer held responsible for workers transposition

3 words, Un-identified aluminium conductors. The fact that there were two black sheathed conductors should have alerted the Electrician that this was going to be a polarity nightmare. Also the fact that WorkSafe flexed their muscles in this case is quite worrying and went over and above what the EWR...

I would also make that fan an SELV fan, not mains voltage.
Run off of a transformer in the roof.

Re: is it ok for apprentices to work alone?

It also depends on the apprentice. Some people pick things quite easily, others not so. Those are the people that need to be supervised well. There was an apprentice a few years back found dead in a trench with a set of Duspols beside him, when he was working on an underground cable. This is why we ...

Single Phase Welders, let's get to the bottom of this

Hi Guys, As an Electrician, I do testing and tagging in a few places, because I can, it is pretty soul-destroying but it pays the bills. Now, every time I test and tag a couple of places, the welders (mainly MIG and Stick) have got 15A plug-tops attached to them because the company that services the...

Re: Strip Connector Busbar?

For the Wiedmuller ones and the Legrand ones, they have screw links between the middle of the terminals, where the terminals fit to a DIN Rail.
I have no idea why in this day and age you would use wire links between terminals, in this situation.

Lock dogs for Rotary CB's ?

Hi Guys, May I please ask what you guys are using to lock-out circuits that use the rotary type circuit-breakers. The type that I'm asking about are the Siemens Sirius gear where they don't have a hole in the actuator to put a padlock through. These are normally the lower current types (as in 6-20A)...

Hi there guys, These are almost similar to the old "Quicklag" breakers that used to be fitted in the older Gael switchboards. I had to remove one of them elderly units last week as the fuse-switch unit at the bottom had failed destructively at 5 am. I'm surprised that there are any of these still ar...

Suffice to say AlecK,
The protection only protects the cable running to the motor or the drive supplying it, not the motor itself.

Personally, After a month or three of mucking around with this company, don't bother buying anything off of them. That is really hard to say, given that most companies are only too happy to sell you their wares, this one isn't. I asked for a quote on getting an Insulation/RCD tester from them, never...

Re: Bootlace Ferrules on standard non-flexible cables

JamieP, Personally I've only ever used these ferrules on what you'd call flexible cables and multi-cores that have really fine wires, that could cause a short-circuit if one of the strands made it into an adjacent terminal during termination. This was the whole idea of the boot-lace ferrule back in ...

Re: squirrel cage induction motor 50 hz 60 hz

Hi Guys, I work on motors that are inherently controlled by VFD's (or VSD's, if you want to call them that). Most of the stuff is pumps for liquids, if you go below 30Hz with any type of pump, it will not move any liquid and you have cavitation issues as well. If however, you run a pump that is mean...

Asked to connect a motor. This was a used motor so I checked the winding resistances, insulation resistance between windings and IR from windings to frame. My IRs were around 0.5M through to around 2.5M at the highest. I decided I wasn't happy to connect. My question is was this a fair judgement? I...

Hi Guys, I've seen a lot of this in the last few years, mainly with respect to range-hoods that are supposed to be vented through the roof or out through the wall adjacent to the hob/stove. Usually the excuse is that the "person" couldn't find the correct transition fitting to go from rectangular to...

Re: Bootlace Crimpers - Hex vs Square

Hey Guys, You really get what you pay for with this sort of thing. I did controls wiring for years with just the ratchet scissor type, never again, once the jaws start to wear and don't give a perfect crimp anymore, in the bin they go. We had issues with the wires merely falling out of bootlaces tha...
