Re: Earth wire type for PV Array
Hi Jamie, I struggle to see how equipotential bonding wires are thought to be excluded from the definition of a PV array. Just look at the items that are excluded by the definition i.e. “PV Array foundation, tracking apparatus, thermal control and other such components”. Not one of these items are d...

Re: Generator set up
Hi JamieP, Have you had a look at this document - https://www.resourcesregulator.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/out10-2110-ees-014-technical-principles-for-the-use-of-stand-alone-generators-_version-2__5_.pdf While has no legal standing in NZ, the same standards are referenced (i.e. AS/NZS...

60 Hertz Welding Generator
There is a scenario where a 60 Hertz welding generator is being used and the mechanics want to power hand tools off it (mostly grinders). Is this permitted in NZ? ESR 29 (2) appears to permit this. Is there anything wrong with using this at 60 Hertz if the tools are rated for 60 Hertz and a non-stan...

Re: ESR 78D (2)(c) Periodic Assessments in Quarries and Alluvial Mining
Hi JamieP,
The EWRB’s direction regarding the limits to electrical work appear to make it clear that an Inspector who does not have a Mining Endorsement cannot do the Inspection – see https://www.ewrb.govt.nz/for-registered ... s-of-work/ for Electrical Inspector section "j"

Re: Tesla Gen.3 Wall Charger
Both 7.9.3 (domestic) & 7.9.4 (other) specify that the "subcircuit" shall be protected; and you can't provide this protection at the downstream end. Hi AlecK – I’m really curious as to why protection can’t be provided at the downstream end as long as it’s a single circuit without branches – along t...

Re: 5.7.5 Supplementary Equipotential Bonding
Just had another look at the wording after being prompted by AlecK’s comment “In 5.7; two times are specified: 0.4 sec for sockets (and some other particular types of equipment), and 5 sec for any other circuit”, and was surprised that the wording may not be as clear cut as I initially suspected. I ...

Re: Motor Insulation Resistance test
The motor is a 37kW internally connected (delta) with three active conductors only (no neutral). Hence the motor lead on which the tests were done has three active conductors and earth. The test showed the same pattern regardless of whether it was conducted between red and earth, white and earth, or...

Motor Insulation Resistance test
I have an old ( 8y+) submersible pump motor that had been disconnected for more than 6 months. I wanted to check and see if it tested ok and so did an insulation resistance test between phase and earth. I was expecting to get a reading either good or bad, however something unexpected happened – the ...

PDL breakers
I came across these old PDL devices that I suspect are MCBs. Can anyone provide any information on them including what range they are from, are they MCBs and what fault currents they are rated for etc? Thanks in advance for any help!
