Scope of Testing as applicable to personal items

Post by Jeffery »

AS/NZS 3760 gives the intervals for the Testing and Tagging of Electrical Equipment in Residential type areas.
i) Does the scope of this standard exclude personal items (laptops, electric razors etc) of persons staying in “hotels,… motels … and the like” to be tested and tagged by a competent person
ii) or is the scope limited to the electrical appliances owned by the “hotels… motels.. and the like”.

3760 isn't a cited standard, so there is no mandated rule to do testing and tagging, but the ESR's say that if an appliance is tested to 3760 (and passes) then it is deemed "Electrically Safe" this meets worksafes requirements of "Taking reasonable actions" in relation to safety of electrical appliances.

You can set up your own system of testing to prove electrical safety, but using 3760 makes it an easy path that has the weight of the ESR's behind it, and should things go wrong and you have followed 3760 you shouldn't have worksafe looking your way.

It would be near impossible for a Hotel to impose 3760 on guests personal appliances, but if the Hotel wanted to ensure that their appliances were safe to use for guests then it would make sense for them to have them tested on a regular basis, 3760 is one way to go.

Yes the Standard's Scope covers personal devices.
But that's not the point; what matters here is the scope of work requested by the client;
which as Greg suggests is Unlikely to include guest's personal equipment in a hotel setting.
That said, I am aware of at least one rest home that requires residents' personal appliances to be tested and tagged.
