60 Hertz Welding Generator

Post by JamesM »

There is a scenario where a 60 Hertz welding generator is being used and the mechanics want to power hand tools off it (mostly grinders). Is this permitted in NZ? ESR 29 (2) appears to permit this.

Is there anything wrong with using this at 60 Hertz if the tools are rated for 60 Hertz and a non-standard plug is used to prevent the tools being used in a standard 50 Hertz supply?

ESR 29 applies to cases where electricity is being supplied, eg over a network.
It's not for cases of direct supply to equipment, with no "works" or "installation" in the mix.

I can see nothing inherently unsafe about using 60 Hz rated tools on a 60 Hz genset.

However I believe most power tools in NZ will be rated for 50 Hz, not 60 Hz; and since speed is related to frequency could be dangerous to operate at the higher frequency.
