Lapidary Bench Grinder

Post by JamieP »

I've been asked if I can connect single phase lapidary bench grinder for doing greenstone and having not really dealt with much things like this I just wanted to get some advice on how to go about it, I'm just reading through 4.13 in regards to motors

What makes it harder is the pictures I've received are not very clear either and this is all the information at this stage

If I feel like it's something I don't know enough about I'll turn it down but I'm assuming it's not that complex when it's a small motor like this it's more just a case of never having touched on it

Might be time to walk away from this one, internal motor wiring looks pretty shot, insulation is falling to bits.
You could easily spend more what it is worth in labour fixing it vs. buying a new one.

If you buy a cheap grinder from Mitre10 about $80, Tool Shed about $180. You could easily spend 3 hrs tearing the motor down and repairing the wires, that's $180 in labour right away assuming nothing else is wrong.

True but by the time you modify a cheapie to mount the specialised turntable from this old one, the customer will have paid as much and will have ended up with a bit more asian junk on his bench that is not warranted after being modified.

Realistically, what's the time involved in replacing the shot insulation (?or cover them in new heatshrink) and fitting a 3 pin cable? At least the customer will end up with a unit that'll still be running after he's retired.

Apart from the 220V nameplate, it shouldn't be too muck trouble for a motor rewinder?

Appreciate the comments but I've decided to pass on this job, one due to lack of experience with these things but also the fact I'm not really set up in a way to do such a job under the restrictions

On that note, if anyone in CHCH wants the contact details to do it, let me know

I noticed that but thought maybe it said 220V/230V, just very hard to tell the second half
