Under deck cable protection

Post by greesleeve »

Hi team,

What are the rules regarding protection of low voltage cables under a deck?

Also what tips do you have for clipping 12 v cables for garden lighting to bricks. I found a you tube video where the guy drilled a hole for a piece of dowel and use that to nail in the clips.

Thanks

The rules are that, under the Electricity (Safety) Regulations, ESR 59 requires both low voltage and extra-low voltage parts of installations must comply with AS/NZS 3000.
12 V wiring is in the extra-low voltage category. That means it's not "prescribed electrical work" so no authorisation (licence) is required; but it must still be done to comply with the Standard.
Generally that means ensuring that the cable is adequately supported, and is protected against environmental influences and whatever sorts of mechanical damage are likely in the circumstances.
