AS/NZS 3000:2007 4.10 (Heating Cables) + NZS6110

Post by Slovett »

Hi all,

Im just having a lock down read in reference to Underfloor heating. Does 4.10 (Heating Cables) also include Under Tile Heating? Im guessing it does as its a Cable that is made / installed to produce heat, but can't find any definitions to what is classed as a Heating Cable.

4.10.5 says All heating cables shall be provided with additional protection by an RCD with a fixed rated residual current not exceeding 30mA, and -

(a) - in the case of heating units fitted with a conductive covering, this covering shall be earthed; and -

(b) in the case of underfloor heating units without a conductive covering, an earthed metallic grid with a spacing not exceeding 30mm shall be provided above the under floor heating cable;......

I don't install under floor / under tile heating, but have been on site plenty of times when under tile heating has been installed. The heating cables are usually flexible (From what Ive seen), which I'm guessing would mean that they don't have a conductive cover, which means (b) would apply - but I don't think I've ever seen anyone install an earthed metallic grid above the heating cables of Under Tile Heating

Also NZS6110 - Its referenced in 3000 in the general header in 4.10.1. ESR 59 says that ELV and LV installations are to comply with 3000, but there is no reference to 6110 in the ESR. - How do we know what version of 6110 is to be followed. Im guessing in this case it would just be the latest edition??

Thanks

I'd definitely class under tile heating as under floor heating

In regards to 4.10.5, I can't speak for your particular situation but all the ones I've done have had a braided screen under the outer insulation, they are normally flexible from what I've dealt with

Because NZS6110 is cited in 3000 and not in ESRs then you use the latest version since it doesn't specify a date in the 3000 citations

4.10 "electric heating cables for floors and ceilings and trace heating applications."
Includes all types of heating cables for all applications (hard to think of anything that wouldn't fit).
So whether you call in "in floor", "under-floor", "under-tile" or whatever doesn't matter; it's still a heating cable for a floor.

Whatever it is; if you install it for hearing a floor or a ceiling, then "6110" applies as well as 4.10 of "3000".
However of you happen to install the same stuff into a wall ; then that's specifically excluded from "6110", but depending on circumstances may still have to comply with 4.10 as a "trace heating" system.
Not that I've ever heard of a heated wall, but it could happen; maybe as an alternative to a mirror pad, or even as a heat source for the room
