Main switchboard, main switch

Post by DougP »

Hypothetical..

If there was a main switchboard on a pole near the property boundary (configured correctly as a MSB), and the only outgoing circuit was a submain to a house, can the submain protective device also be the main switch?

In other words, there is only one 63A circuit breaker on the switchboard marked as "Main Switch" and that provides O/L and SC protection for the submain.
Or is there a requirement for them to be separate devices?

No requirement for separate devices, as long as there's only one outgoing circuit and appropriate labelling is in place indicating all functions.
A third function could be overload protection for the mains.

Thanks. Yes I thought it was probably fine. Similar to a transportable switchboard with only one RCBO.
Good to get a second opinion though ;)

Sometimes a Standard specifically states that functions may be combined; but the basic rule is that if it ain't banned it's permitted.
